What is oud, really?
Oud, also called agarwood, is one of the most storied materials in all of fragrance. It forms when a wild Aquilaria tree is infected by a particular mold and produces a dark, fragrant resin in response. That resin is rare, slow to form, and among the most expensive raw materials in the world, which is why genuine oud appears far more often in legend than in actual products.
Why most "oud" is an accord
Because real agarwood is so scarce and costly, most oud in candles and fragrance, ours included, is a synthetic accord built to capture its smoky, resinous depth. That is the practical and more sustainable route: an accord gives a consistent scent, avoids pressure on wild Aquilaria, and lets us keep the formula phthalate-free. The "smoked" facet adds a dry, almost charred, leathery layer on top of the wood.
How smoked oud behaves in a candle
Oud is a base note, built from large, slow-evaporating molecules. In a burn that means it reads as a long, low warmth rather than a sharp hit at the top of the nose.
