Our Candle Ingredients
Fragrance Oils
We partner directly with a family owned fragrance house to ensure our fragrance oils are held to the highest standards.
Fragrance oils are a blend of synthetic or natural compounds designed to mimic the scents of various natural sources such as flowers, fruits, spices, and more. They are widely used in candle making to provide a broad spectrum of aromas, enhancing the sensory experience of burning candles.
We've chosen to use fragrance oils over alternatives because we can source them reliably, knowing they are made from the highest quality ingredients - and only those ingredients.
Fragrance Oils vs Essential Oils
- Fragrance oils are often synthetically created in labs, though they can also contain natural components. They are designed to replicate a wide variety of scents, including those not found in nature.
- Essential oils are natural extracts from plants, capturing the essence of the source plant. They are usually extracted through processes like steam distillation.
- Fragrance oils are more cost-effective because they are synthetically produced.
- Essential oils are typically more expensive due to the large amounts of plant material required to produce them.
- Fragrance oils usually provide a stronger and longer-lasting scent throw compared to essential oils.
- Essential oils are more subtle and often have a weaker scent throw compared to fragrance oils, especially in hot throw (when the candle is burning).
- High-quality fragrance oils, such as those we use, are formulated to be free of harmful chemicals like phthalates and carcinogens.
- Essential oils are valued for their therapeutic benefits, such as stress relief and sleep enhancement. This makes them a popular choice for aromatherapy candles
- Fragrance oils can be less resource-intensive to produce, but they sometimes contain petrochemical derivatives, which can raise environmental concerns - a reason we've been so selective in our ingredient choices.
- Essential oils are natural, but their production can be resource-intensive and sometimes lead to over harvesting of plants. This is not necessarily the standard, but can have significant ecological impactsโ.
Sustainability
Fragrance oils, when sourced and manufactured responsibly, are a great sustainable choice for candles. High-quality fragrance oils are formulated to exclude harmful chemicals, making them safer for both the environment and consumers.
We only use fragrance oils developed under stringent safety and environmental standards, limiting environmental impact as much as possible. Compared to some natural alternatives like essential oils, which may require large amounts of plant material, synthetic fragrance oils can be more sustainable as they are less resource-intensive to produce.
Also, not all fragrance oils are created equal. It's important to confirm what you're burning in your candles - because you are breathing it in, after all.
